Order and density fluctuations near the boundary in sheared dense suspensions

چکیده

We introduce a novel approach to reveal ordering fluctuations in sheared dense suspensions, using line scanning combined rheometer and laser confocal microscope. validate the technique with moderately suspension, observing modest shear-induced nearly linear flow profile. At high concentration ( ϕ = 0.55) applied stress just below shear thickening, we report temporal resolution, directly measure decrease order distance from suspension’s bottom boundary as well direct correlation between particle concentration. Higher produces thickening large which find are accompanied by dramatic suspension speeds. The peak rates independent of boundary, indicating that they likely arise transient jamming creates solid-like aggregates particles moving together, but only briefly because speed interspersed regions flowing much more slowly, suggesting suspensions possess complex internal structural dynamics, even relatively simple geometries.

Microstructure and velocity fluctuations in sheared suspensions

The velocity fluctuations present in macroscopically homogeneous suspensions of neutrally buoyant, non-Brownian spheres undergoing simple shear flow, and their dependence on the microstructure developed by the suspensions, are investigated in the limit of vanishingly small Reynolds numbers using Stokesian dynamics simulations. We show that, in the dilute limit, the standard deviation of the vel...

Slow dynamics of equilibrium density fluctuations in suspensions of colloidal hard spheres near the glass transition

A mean-field theory for the dynamics of equilibrium suspensions of colloidal hard spheres near the glass transition is presented based on the standpoint recently proposed by the present author. It is shown that although the relative magnitude of the density fluctuations to the mean equilibrium density is small even near the glass transition, they are described by a nonlinear stochastic equation...

Localized stress fluctuations drive shear thickening in dense suspensions.

Dense particulate suspensions exhibit a dramatic increase in average viscosity above a critical, material-dependent shear stress. This thickening changes from continuous to discontinuous as the concentration is increased. Using direct measurements of spatially resolved surface stresses in the continuous thickening regime, we report the existence of clearly defined dynamic localized regions of s...

Self-diffusion in sheared suspensions

Self-diffusion in a suspension of spherical particles in steady linear shear flow is investigated by following the time evolution of the correlation of number density fluctuations. Expressions are presented for the evaluation of the self-diffusivity in a suspension which is either macroscopically quiescent or in linear flow at arbitrary Peclet number Pe = j a 2 / 2 D , where j i s the shear rat...

Fluctuations near the Deconfinement Phase Transition Boundary

In this talk I discuss how a first order phase transition may proceed in rapidly expanding partonic matter produced in a relativistic heavy-ion collision. The resulting picture is that a strong collective flow of matter will lead to the fragmentation of a metastable phase into droplets. If the transition from quark-gluon plasma to hadron gas is of the first order, it will manifest itself by str...
